Commanding a British LEGO Ship of the Line!
Based very much on a British Quarterdeck, I created the above image as part of my Napoleonic Wars Parody - The Brickish Empire. This episode is yet to be released, but has been immense fun to work on!
This was rendered in Blender, using assets from Mecabricks. It takes place on the Quarterdeck of my very own 74-gun ship of the line, HMS Endurance.
For the officers, I did some basic edits of existing torsos. The 2009 LEGO Governor had his sash removed, and stripey shirt expanded. The Lieutenant was a recolour of the classic Governor Broadside's torso, while the Midshipman was my own design of torso (on reflection, I should have made the lines thicker). Finally, the helmsman is another recolour of a 2009 pirate, to a darker navy blue.
For the Quarterdeck itself, I took a lot of inspiration from model 74-gun ships, which sadly are all that remain as the last Royal Navy ship of it's type, Duguat-Trouin, a veteran of Trafalgar was scuttled in 1949. Along with this, the close-up scenes from Hornblower: Mutiny and of course a look at the larger HMS Victory gave a conclusion of the look of such a Quarterdeck, albeit in slightly different proportions to suit a LEGO 74-gun Ship of the Line!
You can watch HMS Endurance sailing briefly, in my Youtube Short - A British Man of War below!
